Staying In Hotel Rooms is so 2014. Why Not Mattress Run Instead- Sheraton Dublin, Ca

So I almost ended 2014 with 27 stays and 49 nights at Starwood Properties. Really that was just fine, I had enough stays to qualify again for Starwood’s top tier Platinum Status, and I was pretty happy about that. Sadly thought, the push for Platinum with Starwood meant that I didn’t requalify for Hilton Diamond status after having it for the past 10 years and I ended up 8 stays or 20 days short in that program so I’m stuck with Gold. In any event if you hit 50 nights with Starwood in one year you get a perk that I’ve not had before and thought could be worth it to get. When you qualify with nights versus stays they provide you with 10 Sweet Suite night upgrades. Since I’ve never had this perk before, I’m not 100% sure it’ll be that great but for one more night’s stay it might be worth it to attain. Here’s what the award provides me.

So on December 31st, nothing like waiting till the last minute, I decided a mattress run was in order. Now I really didn’t have time to stay at a hotel, we had friends coming over to celebrate the New Year, nor did I really want to schlep to a hotel family in tow for one last night. The really good hotels in San Francisco were running $300-$500/night. So I found a pretty good deal at the local Sheraton Dublin $93/night AAA rate and I booked it at 11 AM that day. Now the challenge was I had to work and didn’t have time to check in, so my wife the trooper that she is, and the ULTIMATE supporter of my habit obliged me and said she’d check us in. So off she went and 45 minutes later she was checking into the hotel. Continue reading

Happy Anniversary- Thanks for reading my blog

can-stock-photo_csp17699511

So it’s been two years this month writing whereisrahul, and it’s been a blast so far. My intention initially was to talk about travel and travel only, since that’s what I do a lot and enjoy a lot too. But travel 24/7 can be dull (not really) and writing about life, family, travel and fun stuff I’m lucky enough to do has been really rewarding and even better than just talking about travel. I stared this blog, because I wanted a platform that I could use to talk, vent and share my experiences in hopes of helping others,  and that’s exactly what I’ve been able to do.

It’s rewarding to see that my “insight”, can be helpful to other geeks out there and that people actually read my diatribes, reviews and drivel. Who knew what I had to say could be interesting? So as the journey continues on, I hope that my faithful readers, and new ones keep an eye out for my families travels. And as always if you have a question about why, how or how come I did something crazy please ask, that’s how I know someone is reading.

In any event thank you to everyone that takes the time out of their day to read about my craziness, it’s been fun doing this and hope to continue for a long time.

Our babies have flown the nest

DSC_0442

Mommy holding down the fort

We’ve been very lucky to have a hummingbird family living in our backyard for the past month or so. My wife first spotted the nest and the mommy and then several other hummingbirds hanging around our enormous Oak tree. We finally found the postage stamp of a nest, no bigger than a golf ball. It truly was an amazing site, and I spent countless hours just staring at it and the bird incubating its eggs.

The nest is so small

Finally one day we saw babies, yes two little guys hanging out in the nest. I just can’t tell you how incredible it was to see mommy and two little birdies attempt to live in this minuscule house. But man was it cute. Sadly after about two weeks of living with mom the birds vanished, we hope that flew away but other than that we have not had any sightings of the babies. I think I still see the mom around occasionally, but we never did get to see the kiddos fly. Continue reading

Obsession, isn’t that a Cologne?

Obsession, isn’t that a cologne? Do they even make that anymore? My wife is a really really good sport. I spend a few minutes every day scheming, scheming for where to go next. And no I don’t mean where to go tomorrow or next week, but where to go on vacation or take a quick weekend trip too. Why? Well, when you have miles to spend and there are deals to be had I just have to see what and where I/we should go. Continue reading

One Quarter Down Three To Go

Only 80,000 miles traveled thus far this year

Only 80,000 miles traveled thus far this year

So this has been a very very busy quarter for me. Wow I know I have traveled a lot of miles in other years, but for some reason this year and this quarter just seem a little over the top. The majority of the travel has been personal, three trips to Dubai over an eight week period and one trip to LA. But for work I’ve already been to Portland, Dallas, Chicago, Calgary, Toronto, Phoenix, Eugene, Bozeman, Las Vegas and Denver and it’s only March 28th. Wowezers. Continue reading

Nemo, Dory, Nemo, Dory, Nemo

My kid loves the aquarium, anytime we tell her we’re going it really makes her day and I just love that. “S” loves the ocean, loves looking at fish and just can’t get enough of it, just like I did when I was young. Last weekend we spend a very nice afternoon at the Academy of Sciences and the Steinhardt Aquarium in Golden Gate Park. We have an annual pass and do our best to get there as often as we can, that being said it’s probably been three months since I’ve been there. This place is just amazing, and every visit I marvel at how great a place it is, coupled with the fact that I get to see it with a new set of eyes, just make it that much cooler.

The funny part about coming here or going any place that has an aquarium, is that “S’s” first words are always where’s Nemo and Dory. It’s pretty amazing she’s only two years old and knows who they are and knows what they look like. I guess we’ve trained her well, ha ha. But seriously, that’s the only movie she’s ever seen, granted about five times maybe more, but she’s incredibly observant. Damn smart kids. The funny part is that she saw the movie on our trip to the Maldives last December on the inflight TV, and ever since when she sees a TV on a plane she expects they will play it. Oh how little she knows about air travel.

I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves about the Academy, but I will say that if you’re ever in the city this is definitely a place to check out for sure.
