MMMM…Walt Disney World

Johnny bit my finger

Last month we had the opportunity to visit Walt Disney World for four nights. We had a great time hanging out as a family at the park and at the pool. The last time we were here was November of 2015 and we were all itching to go back. I’ve written up a few reviews previously so I’ll only focus on a few meals we had while there. Continue reading

Finally in Hawaii. I love deplaning onto the tarmac

After an unexpected overnight delay in Dallas and an intervention by an AAngel who got me on the nonstop from DFW I was set for Kona. I was excited to fly nonstop to Hawaii from Dallas, this was the longest domestic NS I’ve ever flown clocking in at 3724 miles.I went to the plane about 10 minutes prior to boarding, people seem to always be happy going to Hawaii, and this was no different especially when it was during spring break. Once they started boarding I made my way onto the plane. The AA 767 is mostly used for long-haul domestic flights and shorter international destinations. These are some of the older planes in the fleet and although I enjoy the lie flat seat the fact that these planes don’t offer in-seat entertainment, Wi-Fi or in seat power in coach so on an eight hour trip this could be a slog. 3724- My Longest Domestic Non-Stop Flight

So I was going on vacation to Kona Hawaii for 10 days and I was excited. It was our first vacation since August of last year and we all needed it. There was a shave ice emergency and the only way to cure it was a trip to Hawaii. We had a simple trip planned. I was to fly home from Wichita on Friday night, get home around 10 pm and in the morning, the three of us would fly direct to Kona from San Francisco. Easy pesy right? Wrong!

I got delayed in Dallas due to who knows what by American Airlines. First no plane, then mechanical, then no crew, then no plane again, the list goes on and on. Finally by midnight yes midnight, I had enough. If I left in the next two hours I’d have less than two hours in SFO before my flight. And that was assuming no other delays. That’s assuming we actually left by 2 AM, which was not even confirmed. I called AA and asked them to reroute me direct from Dallas to Kona. The first agent said no, I spoke to him for over 20 minutes and he would Continue reading

Pub Crawl Disney Style

IMG_2543

Beer’s around the world can make you do crazy things.

When you’re at Walt Disney World and have a free afternoon at Epcot what should you do? Have an Around The World Pub Crawl of course. Back in early November when my family was there I had to take the opportunity to tick this one item off my bucket list. Yeah I know kind of cheesy, but at least I didn’t buy a t-shirt to commemorate the achievement. Here’s my accomplishment in all it’s glory. For all you beer aficionados, no I didn’t take notes of what I drank. Sorry.

Trip Report:United Airlines Global First SFO-Seoul

Trip Report:United Airlines Global First SFO-Seoul

Intorduction

This was my first official trip on United in international First Class. I’ve flown them dozens of times in Business and had one partial trip from London to SFO back in the early 2000’s when my seat was inoperable and they moved me to First, some upgrade. I was really excited to try out the “new” first class, well it’s not really that new say seven years old or so, but hey First Class is First Class. Besides that, on my return home from Seoul I’m flying Singapore in Suites Class on the a380 and I needed something to compare that too. I mean it’s possible that United might be actually better right? Blasphemy. No never, but who knows. Anyhow on with the show.

I had a 1:15 hour connection at SFO and with boarding starting 55 minutes prior to departure, I figured I had a run ahead of me from the 60’s gates to 100 in the International Terminal. Low and behold my departure was delayed and we had no idea how long, so that gave me a chance to visit my favorite lounge, The American Express Centurion Lounge. I was only there long enough to get a drink and take a shower. Since there was no posted departure time I hightailed it to the United Global First Lounge since it was next to my gate and they would announce when boarding was starting. I was really not in the mood to run once boarding commenced. BTW I’m not a lounge whore but I do love them, and even though the AMEX one is far superior to any United Lounge I’ve ever been too I don’t get many chances to visit the First Class Lounge, so I had to go.

Eating My Way Through Kansas City…MMMM

What a great food trip to KC. I was there for work but these three places came highy regarderd and I had to try them out. All three were good, but the first two Jack Stack and KC Joe’s (formerly Okloahoma Joe’s were outstanding). Sadly Arthur Bryant’s was not, I have to imagine it had to do with going to the strip mall location not the original. Big mistake!! Next time check out the address and info first, darn you Yelp.

In any event the burnt ends at Jack Stack were flipping Amazing, and the pulled pork and fries at KC Joe’s were over the top g-oo-d.

Next time your in Kansas City, check ’em out.

Our whirlwind trip half way around the world was almost at an end. We had finally made it to the country of our vacation and were on our last flight to Koh Samui, Thailand. We’ve had so much fun getting to Thailand, and were just excited for our last trip. We had landed in Bangkok and had one and a half hours to connect to our domestic flight.

Prior to our flights we had to navigate the airport, and this is where Thai Airways excels. Where Lufthansa has an amazing inflight product and an incredible lounge and terminal in Frankfurt for First Class passengers. Thai has always been known for their incredible ground service at their hub airport Suvarnabhumi for first class guests. What they may lack in the air they make up for here. When you land and leave the jet way they have a golf cart and driver to escort you to your next point. Whether that’s customs, baggage claim or the lounge and spa depending on your layover.

Here we go.

Let me just say that after an incredibly great flight on Lufthansa in First, I was looking for an equally good experience on Thai Airways. This was my second time experiencing Thai in First Class, but for both my wife and I our first time on the upper deck of an a380. So I was really looking forward to the experience. If you’re curious how I booked these tickets and how you can too, click here. Continue reading

Wow what a flight we had on Lufthansa 491 from Seattle to Frankfurt. Once we landed we were greeted at the tarmac by a driver and a Mercedes Benz minivan. Unfortunately we arrived at a remote apron, so we had to bus/drive to the terminal. Thankfully being in first has perks on the ground too and that’s why we had a car waiting for us. There were two cars based on whether you were ending or connecting. Since we were connecting, we were sent to the terminal and then dropped off. My only pet peeve, the driver had no idea where to send us form there, we were left on our own. Since we had a 4 plus hour layover, our fight was not on the board, we had to find an agent to tell us what terminal to go to. I know first world problems here. In our case we lucky this was our terminal.

After going through security to get back in the terminal, we were left to our own devices. I know that we had lounge access but I didn’t know if it was the Lufthansa Senator lounge of the Lufthansa First Class Lounge. I figured we roll the dice and try the latter first. Worst case scenario they’d kick us out and send us on our way. Because we were traveling onward on another Star Alliance carrier in First, I thought we would not have access, so to my very happy surprise we we’re allowed in. Yippee!!

I was truly surprised in how nice this place was. Besides having a dining area with self-serve food, with some really amazing options. Including freshly sliced prosciutto and fresh made Nutella. They also had a cigar lounge, bathroom suites and an incredible bar selection. I was blown away. I’ve been very lucky to have visited The Private Room four times in Singapore, which is a lounge within a lounge within a lounge. As well as the Cathay Pacific First class lounges in Hong Kong and the Qantas First Class international lounge in Sydney to name a few. These are some of the best in the world from what I understand, but the Lufthansa First Class Lounge in Frankfurt took the cake. Every amenity I just mentioned was free here, it was just incredible.

Ok so like an idiot I forgot to take a picture of the actual sign to the Lounge, this was the best I could do.

It’s the one leading up to the shower suites.

This was the beginning of a journey almost 1 year in the making. And was to celebrate our 10 years of marriage plus the first time in 3 1/2 years we’ve vacationed without our little kid in tow. Granted as I’ve said earlier in other parts of this Trip Report, we’ve not scaled back our travels. She’s been to Australia, Singapore, Maldives, Disneyworld twice, over 1/2 a dozen trips to Disneyland and even a Transatlantic Cruise from London to Florida.

That being said if you’re parent you can relate to my excitement of haveing an opportunity to travel with just your better half. Knowing that you don’t have to worry or think about all the little things that go along with traveling with a kid. Let alone hoping and praying that they don’t disturb the other guests.
